Requirements

Whatcom Smart Trips users are always on the go, so they approached us requesting an extension of their website to meet the needs of their mobile users - a web app.  This app would need to allow users to log in, add trips to their trip calendar, adjust their account information, or register if they're new. All of the information on the web app would need to synchronize with the full site at whatcomsmarttrips.org, so that users would see the same data in both locations.

Solutions

Familiar with mobile design and the desktop Whatcom Smart Trips website, we decided to start with a wireframe design to outline functionality for the client before moving into a full design. Since the data from the mobile application would need to synchronize with the full site, we chose not to use a second CMS for this client, but rather build on the code that they already have for their current site. For this application, everything was done completely custom. Extensive testing was done on the iPhone, Android, and Windows 7 phone to make sure that each modern smart phone user would see a neatly rendered version of the site and find it to smoothly function for their needs while they're making Smart Trips around Whatcom County.
