Washington State Destination Based Sales Tax

by Rusty Swayne July 17, 2008 7:49 PM

The newly approved destination based sales tax (Substitute Senate Bill 5089 - Streamlined Sales Tax) in Washington State has been causing a lot of headaches for the small e-commerce store owner.   Basically this law forces every Washington State business that sells products online to tax orders made by customers within Washington State at the tax rate at the delivery address rather than that of the originating store.

Small businesses that are simply selling a handful of products online as a way to subsidize their bricks and mortar retail may even have second thoughts about whether or not the added administration is worth even keeping their sites running let alone spend additional moneys to get their once correctly working website retrofitted to lookup the appropriate sale tax rate.

However, all is not doom and gloom as the state did at least provide the Washington Sales Tax Rate Library which allows for you to quickly develop what they call a "rate lookup service."  I posted an example of the rate lookup service I wrote today.  It basically consists of a REST call that returns an xml response (they have a text response option) that gets parsed and returned.
