A Mindfly Murder Mystery

As the holidays crept up on us this year, complete with a winter wonderland, Mindfly decided to do something a little different to celebrate the season. Forget Secret Santas. Forget carol singing. Instead of a standard office Christmas party, we had a Murder Mystery.

Mindfly Murder Mystery

A murder mystery party is basically a game of CLUE, come to life. A group of people are gathered for a party and when a murder takes place, you have to figure out which of your fellow guests committed the crime. Everyone is assigned a character with secrets to reveal throughout the night that will help point the way to the culprit.

There are a variety of websites that sell packets to help hosts plan a party of their own (Google “murder mystery party” and you’ll get nearly 600,000 hits). The parties can be themed around different eras and events, which can help guests really get into character through costuming. The Mindfly Murder Mystery was set in 1920s New York City, with jazz singers and flappers galore.

Luckily for us, Mindfly has a certified (well…I don’t know if he’s certified, but he’s very, very good) live action role playing facilitator in our midst. Kyle spent hours creating characters for the Mindfly employees, significant others, and even kids with stories that wove together in a scandalous web involving jealous lovers and corrupt politicians.

Having a murder mystery party was Rusty’s big idea, but like so many things at Mindfly, it couldn’t have come together without the efforts of everyone on the team. I think an extra big hand goes to our hostess Kara for providing delicious food and more booze than two dozen people could possibly drink (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating…but have you seen our tree?). Well-deserved props also go to Kyle who went well beyond his job title of “Web Developer” to carefully craft a mystery and characters that Mindfliers could bring to life.

I’ll be the first to admit that I was a little skeptical of how much fun I was going to have pretending to be someone else all night. But everyone came to the party with a playful and good-natured attitude, and it was fun to see people being creative in another arena outside the world of the web.
